ADAMS — Gordon Hastings, 85, Baldwinsville, died March 30 of heart failure in Loris, S.C.
Mr. Hastings was an educator for 42 years. He taught mathematics and science for eight years at Hunter-Tannersville Central School, Tannersville, and was business manager for two years at Starpoint Central School, Lockport. Mr. Hastings was principal at Parishville-Hopkinton Central School, Parishville, then in 1959 was assistant principal for business at Hannibal Central School, and retired as superintendent in 1988.
Born Aug. 23, 1922, in Adams, son of James and Nellie Youngs Hastings, he graduated in 1939 from Redwood High School and received a bachelor's degree in 1943 from New York State College for Teachers, Albany, and a master's degree in educational administration in 1951 from New York University, New York City.
He married Sonya Holley in 1988.
Mr. Hastings served in the Army from 1943 to 1946 and received an honorable discharge as second lieutenant at the end of World War II.
Mr. Hastings was a charter member and past president of Central New York Association of School Business Officials, a longtime member of the New York State Council of School Superintendents and attended Our Lady of the Rosary Church, Hannibal.
Surviving besides his wife are a son and his wife, Norman and Lilly, McLean, Va.; two daughters and a son-in-law; Deborah Hastings, Rowayton, Conn., and Victoria Hastings and Eric Miller, Syracuse; a stepson and his wife, James and Betty-Lynne Gillen, Victory Mills; a stepdaughter and her husband, Colleen and Timothy Johnson, Elbridge; eight grandchildren and two cousins.
A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church, Hannibal. A reception will follow the service in the church hall. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery, Sackets Harbor.
