CARTHAGE — The funeral for Bertha Benware, 73, Skaneateles, formerly of Carthage, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Birnbaum Funeral Service, Syracuse.

Mrs. Benware died Sunday at her home, under the care of her family. Calling hours will be from noon to 3 p.m. today and from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Born Jan. 29, 1935, in Marcy, she was a daughter of Alton J. and Ruth Mosher Bowman.

She married Donald H. Benware on March 4, 1975. Mr. Benware died Jan. 23, 1999. A previous marriage to George W. Elmer ended in divorce.

Mrs. Benware enjoyed gardening, canning and knitting.

Surviving, addresses unknown, are three sons and their wives, Gary and Linda Elmer, Randy and Julie Elmer, and Danny and Nancy Elmer; four daughters and two sons-in-law, Jeanne Elmer and Frank Randazzo, Sandi Elmer, Kathleen Elmer, and Holly and Gary Scott; two brothers, Alvin and Harold; three sisters, Ruth, Melva and Ethel; 15 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

A daughter, Darlene "Sis" Elmer; and two brothers, Alton and Elwyn Bowman, died before her.
