CANTON — No charges are expected as the result of a weekend fracas between two women who are both incarcerated for killing children.

The Saturday night incident grew out of a dispute between Shirley R. Winters, 50, who is awaiting sentencing after admitting she killed two children 26 years apart, and Heather J. Hughes, 19, Colton, who admitted fatally shaking and dropping a 10-month-old child.

"It was just a little altercation. It didn't amount to much," said Randy D. Bouchard, jail administrator.

Despite that, Mr. Bouchard said, both women were sent to Canton-Potsdam Hospital, Potsdam, for examination.

"It was all just precautionary," Mr. Bouchard said. No charges are expected as a result of the incident, he said.

Ms. Winters pleaded guilty April 21 in County Court to first-degree manslaughter in the Nov. 28, 2006, drowning of 23-month-old Ryan D. Rivers at his grandparents' home in Pierrepont. She is to be sentenced June 9 to 20 years in prison.

Ms. Winters also pleaded guilty, on April 25 in Onondaga County Court to first-degree manslaughter in satisfaction of charges stemming from the 1980 suffocation of her 5-month old son, Ronald Winters III. She is to be sentenced June 16 in Syracuse to 81/3 to 25 years in prison.

Ms. Hughes was jailed in March after admitting she shook and dropped Megen E. Perham while baby-sitting at his home near Crary Mills on Feb. 2, 2007. She is to be sentenced Monday to six months in jail but was permitted to begin serving the sentence last month.
