AWOL soldier arrested after high-speed chase
WEDNESDAY, MAY 7, 2008

A soldier absent without leave led police on a high-speed pursuit Monday night that ended on Arsenal Street.

Pete N. Pele, 20, of 353 Third St., Fort Drum, faces many charges, including driving while intoxicated, stemming from the pursuit that was begun by state police just after 11 p.m. on Route 342 in LeRay.

State police said his sport utility vehicle was observed passing through a red light at routes 342 and 283 at a high rate of speed. Troopers followed the vehicle, which was pegged at 92 mph and above on Route 283.

Troopers said the vehicle failed to stop at a second light and continued into the city on Factory Street. Troopers then asked for assistance from all surrounding law enforcement agencies. City police observed the vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed through Public Square and onto Arsenal Street.

The vehicle then drove onto the sidewalk and into the Stream parking lot in an attempt to evade police. With a combined effort of state and city police and Jefferson County sheriff's deputies, the vehicle was halted in the 900 block of Arsenal Street.

Mr. Pele was charged with DWI after police alleged his blood alcohol content was 0.12 percent. The state's minimum legal limit is 0.08 percent.

He also was charged with reckless driving, four counts of passing a red light, speeding, driving on a sidewalk, failure to comply and other traffic violations. A charge of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle was lodged after police allegedly found that he did not have the owner's permission to drive the vehicle.

He was turned over to military police and held as AWOL and was issued appearance tickets returnable Thursday for LeRay Town Court and Friday for City Court.
