Wentworth grounds Flyers
TWO-HIT VICTORY: Canton starter fans 10 in Central Division win
TUESDAY, MAY 6, 2008

NORWOOD — Kacie Wentworth threw a two-hitter, striking out 11, to lead Canton to a 9-1 victory over Norwood-Norfolk in a Northern Athletic Conference Central Division softball game Monday.

Wentworth also went 2-for-4 and drove in two runs for Canton (8-1 overall, 5-1 division). Heather Lottie went 3-for-3 for the Golden Bears. Ashley Chapin had an RBI single for the Flyers (5-6, 3-4).

MASSENA 1, OFA 0

Pinch-runner Kayla Dennis scored on a throwing error in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Red Raiders (5-3, 4-2) a Central Division win over OFA in Massena.

Marci Silver singled to lead off the inning and was replaced by Dennis. Sierra Streeter struck out eight for Massena. Katie Nelson had 14 strikeouts for OFA (3-3).

POTSDAM 12, TUPPER LAKE 5

Alysha Brown went 4-for-4 to lead the Sandstoners (3-5, 2-4) past Tupper Lake in a Central Division game in Potsdam. Liz Tvorak went 2-for-2, including a double, for the Lumberjacks (0-6).

EDWARDS-KNOX 12-10,

MORRISTOWN 6-3

Miranda Typhair was the winning pitcher in both games of a West Division doubleheader as the Cougars (6-1, 5-0) swept Morristown in Russell.

Typhair homered in game one and struck out eight in game two. Macy VanArnam had two hits in each game for Morristown (2-9, 1-7).

HERMON-DEKALB 5, LISBON 1

Whitney Stiles had two hits to help Hermon-DeKalb (5-4, 5-2) hand Lisbon its first loss of the season in a West Division game in DeKalb Junction. Jess Mehaffy and Jackie LaFave doubled for Lisbon (3-1).

SALMON RIVER 24,

COLTON-PIERREPONT 1

Alicia Thomas went 4-for-4, including two triples, to lead Salmon River past the Colts (2-5) in an East Division game in Fort Covington.

Brittany Avery and Amber Beyah each added three hits for Salmon River (4-1), and Krista Oakes struck out eight.

ST. LAWRENCE 18,

PARISHVILLE-HOPKINTON 3

Elise Roy and Shelby McGraw each went 4-for-4 to lead the Larries (9-0, 7-0) past Parishville-Hopkinton in an East Division game in Brasher Falls. Sarah Thayer struck out eight for the Larries.

Shannon Gibson had two hits for the Panthers (1-9, 1-8).

MADRID-WADDINGTON 16,

BRUSHTON-MOIRA 7

Cambray Merrick stole four bases to help lead the Yellow Jackets in an East Division game in Madrid. Cierra Wells added two hits and drove in two runs for Madrid-Waddington (4-4, 3-3).

Kelsey Manchester tripled for the Panthers (2-4, 2-2).

CHATEAUGAY 10, ST. REGIS FALLS 2

Lauren LaBare went 3-for-4 to lead the Bulldogs past St. Regis Falls (0-5) in an East Division game at Chateaugay.

Hannah Kinney tripled for Chateaugay (4-1).

CARTHAGE 4, INDIAN RIVER 2

Katie Jones struck out 18 batters, and the Comets scored two in the top of the seventh during an "A" Division game at Philadelphia.

Taylor Kelsey also turned in a strong pitching performance, finishing with 11 strikeouts for Indian River (6-7, 2-3).

Jessica Wilkinson went 3-for-3, while Jessica Dobson-Tufo had two hits for Carthage (5-6, 3-2).

BELLEVILLE HENDERSON 10,

ALEXANDRIA 9

Judith Anderson drove in Brittany Grimshaw with a hit in the bottom of the sixth to provide the winning run for the host Panthers in a "D" Division game.

Alexandria pitcher Cassandra Lingenfelter enjoyed a memorable game in spite of the narrow loss. Finishing with nine strikeouts, the senior hurler set a school record for career strikeouts. Lingenfelter, who also hit a single, a double and a triple, has now fanned 272 batters.

Former Purple Ghosts standout and current Norwood-Norfolk coach Becky Byrns (265) was the previous leader.

Grimshaw also slugged a homer for Belleville Henderson (4-6, 4-5).
