Clarkson sweeps away SLU
BASEBALL DOUBLEHEADER: Giordano strong at plate for Golden Knights

POTSDAM — Matt Giordano went 2-for-3 in each game of a Liberty League baseball doubleheader Saturday, leading Clarkson University to a sweep of rival St. Lawrence University.

Clarkson (17-16 overall, 9-9 Liberty League) won the opening game 6-2 and then took game two 8-5.

Between games, former Clarkson player and coach Jack Phillips was honored as the stadium was dedicated in his name. Phillips is also a former Major League Baseball player who won a World Series ring with the New York Yankees in 1947.

Brady Torbitt and Sam Grainger each had two hits in the opener, while Mike Bresett and Cale Giroux added two hits for the Golden Knights in game two.

Joel Kocan went 2-for-4 to lead the Saints (17-15, 10-9) in the opener. Tim Harris, Charlie Cannan and Joe Shehata each had two hits for SLU in game two.

WOMEN'S TENNIS

WILLIAMS 5, ST. LAWRENCE 0

Grace Baljon and Nikki Reich each won singles events after being part of winning doubles teams as Williams College (17-3) swept past the Saints (15-5) in the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament on Saturday in Williamstown, Mass.

SAINTS SHINE IN STATE MEET

Alyssa Pirinelli won the women's shot put and discus at the state championship meet Saturday in Rochester.

Pirinelli had an NCAA provisional qualifying distance in the shot put with a toss of 43 feet, 1/4-inch. Her discus throw was 121-5.

Tupper Lake native Wendy Pavlus picked up a win in the 3,000 steeplechase, an event she won a state high school championship in last June. SLU's other champion was Dan Ramsey, who won the men's 5,000.

The SLU men finished in second place, and the women were third in the team standings.
