PORT LEYDEN — Charles L. Levensailor, 85, River Road, died Friday at his home.
Mr. Levensailor was employed at the Georgia-Pacific Veneer Mill at McKeever until the mill closed. After that he was employed at the Boonville Division of Ethan Allen Furniture Co., in the sanding and furniture repair divisions, retiring in 1983.
Born Oct. 29, 1922, in Port Leyden, son of Leonard L. and Blanche Windecker Levensailor, he grew up in the town of Lyonsdale and attended the Little Red Schoolhouse on Moose River. Following school he was employed in a state reforestation project in Lewis County. He joined the Army on Jan. 2, 1943, and served in the South Pacific theater during World War II. He served with the 470th anti-aircraft Artillery Battalion and participated in the battles and campaigns of Luzon, New Guinea and Bismarck Archipelago, in the Southern Philippines. He received the Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal, Bronze Arrowhead, Good Conduct Medal, Presidential Unit Citation with a bronze star and Victory Medal. He was honorably discharged Jan. 4, 1946.
Mr. Levensailor married Cassie Emerson on May 4, 1946, at Port Leyden. She died Nov. 8, 1947. He married Helen Bourgeois on July 19, 1950, at the rectory of St. Martin's Church and the couple moved to their home on the River Road near Port Leyden.
He was a member of Harland J. Hennessey Post, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Boonville, was an avid deer and rabbit hunter and raised beagles for rabbit hunting. He enjoyed the outdoors and his camp along the Moose River.
Surviving besides his wife are four sons and three daughters-in-law, Randy L., Port Leyden, Leonard V. and Debbie, Troy, Charles L. and Phyllis, Boonville, and Arnold J. and Heather, Port Leyden; three daughters and their husbands, Debra Ann and Robert Millard, Rome, Sharon I. and Jeffrey McDougall, Phoenix, and Cassie M. and Shawn Smith, Port Leyden; a brother and his wife, Warren and Claris, Port Leyden, 19 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Two sisters, Blanche Irene Levensailor and Betty J. Graves, died before him.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Trainor Funeral Home, Boonville, with the Rev. Jeremy McDougall, grandson of Mr. Levensailor, and pastor of First Baptist Church of South Glens Falls, officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, where members of Harland J. Hennessey Veterans of Foreign Wars Post, Charles J. Love American Legion Post and the Tun Tavern Marine Corps League, all of Boonville, will conduct military rites.
Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
