FORT DRUM — A 10th Mountain Division soldier was killed Monday and two other soldiers were injured when their patrol was attacked with an improvised explosive device near Tuz, Iraq.
Spc. Arturo Huerta-Cruz, 23, a chemical operations specialist assigned to the 10th Brigade Support Battalion, 1st Brigade Combat Team, died in the attack.
He enlisted in the Army in May 2006 and completed basic and advanced individual training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. Spc. Huerta-Cruz, of Clearwater, Fla., was assigned to Fort Drum in October 2006. He deployed to Iraq with the Warrior Brigade in November, serving in the Kirkuk area of northern Iraq.
Spc. Huerta-Cruz's awards and decorations included the Purple Heart, Army Achievement Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.
He is survived by his parents, also of Clearwater.
The names of the two injured soldiers were not available.
