FORT DRUM — A 10th Mountain Division soldier who held two post police officers at gunpoint was shot and killed at his on-post residence by a Fort Drum police officer.

Staff Sgt. Dustin J. McMillen, 29, a member of the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, was shot several times to end the standoff, according to a Fort Drum release. He was taken to Samaritan Medical Center, Watertown, where he was pronounced dead.

Fort Drum emergency services at about 1:30 a.m. Saturday received a 911 hang-up from the McMillen residence. Two police officers — one military policeman and one Department of the Army civilian police officer — responded and spoke with Staff Sgt. McMillen and his wife, the release said.

Staff Sgt. McMillen later produced a concealed weapon and used it to hold off the two officers, firing off two rounds, the release said.

A third officer, while attempting to enter the residence, heard the first shot and had a "discussion" with the soldier, the release said. Then, after the second shot was fired, the officer entered the home and shot Staff Sgt. McMillen several times.

The responding officers were apparently unharmed, but telephone calls Saturday to Fort Drum's media relations officer seeking confirmation of that and further information about the incident were not returned.

A press conference has been scheduled this morning at the Fort Drum Media Operations Center.

Staff Sgt. McMillen was an infantryman assigned to 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, according to a release. Originally from Vancouver, Ore., he joined the Army in December 1998 and served at Fort Campbell, Ky., and Hohenfels, Germany, before being assigned to Fort Drum in September 2004.

Staff Sgt. McMillen deployed with the 3rd Brigade Combat Team to Afghanistan and returned with his unit in June 2007. He is survived by his wife and three children.

Fort Drum's Criminal Investigation Division is investigating the incident.

Other area police agencies were initially dispatched to the scene but were later called off.
